Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES)

Developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), BEES refers to Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability.

It’s purpose is simple, to provide a software platform that builders, developers, product manufacturers and the like can utilize to assist them with the selection of cost-effective, eco-conscious building products.

BEES includes the actual environmental and economic performance data for hundreds of building products and is designed to be a feasible, adaptable, and transparent means of assessing the life-cycle of each product. Adhering to stringent ISO 14040 environmental standards, each component is evaluated to determine which products best meet specific design needs and are considered under the following parameters:

  • Raw material acquisition
  • Manufacture
  • Transportation
  • Installation
  • Use
  • Recycling and waste management

Economic performance is then measured utilizing ASTM’s standard life-cycle cost method. Environmental and economic performance are then combined into an overall performance measure using the ASTM standard for Multi-Attribute Decision Analysis.
