Alternative energy is renewable energy, correct?
Wrong.
Although often used interchangeably, a lack of understanding distorts their respective meanings. To clarify, renewable energy comes from sources that are naturally occurring which can be continually replenished and include solar, wind, and geothermal energy. Conversely, alternative energy relies on non-renewable resources, but they produce fewer emissions than conventional fossil fuel-sourced energy and include: fuel cells, cogeneration, and biomass.
With respect to renewables, solar has enjoyed tremendous growth in the last decade thanks to more efficient and more affordable photovoltaic (PV) panels, while wind has seen the cost of constructing and installing turbines decrease as well. Unfortunately, both still pale in comparison to the total power output of coal & nuclear power plants. With global energy demand growing annually, the particulars regarding how our energy will be generated isn’t going to be decided quickly or easily.
