Methane Gas Capture Systems
Today’s landfills are much more than open fields or pits in which a community throws its trash. They are highly regulated, tightly monitored engineering achievements that can help our communities put some of its trash to good use thanks to methane gas capture systems.
Because methane (CH4) is capable of trapping 25x more heat than CO2, it is considered one of the most worrisome of all the greenhouse gases! As such, it has attracted the attention of scientists and climatologists around the globe as they seek to mitigate the effects of global climate change as a result of human activities.
To that end, many landfills now have methane gas capture systems in place throughout the landfill. These devices contain methane in wells and transfer it through pipes to power plants, which burn the gas. It’s one way humanity is using technology to minimize our impact on the planet, one step at a time.
