Scientists and engineers alike are developing a seemingly endless number of new technologies that will serve as our “Plan B” to supply the world’s (electrical) energy once current oil reserves become too expensive to extract or if they are to be kept for transportation and manufacturing purposes well into the next century.

To that end, we are often presented in the media and advertising with two terms that, to the uninitiated, may seem capable of being used concurrently when they are, in fact, quite different.

Renewable vs. Alternative Energy

Renewable energy refers to energy from sources which are currently commercially available to consumers; they are infinitely available (inexhaustible) and sustainable in their origin. Examples include solar energy & wind energy.

Alternative energy refers to energy from sources that may not be widely available or renewable enough on a scale that satisfies the definition of sustainable. Examples include geothermal energy & biomass fuels.
