The effects of global climate change are happening sooner than many scientists anticipated. This has resulted in architects & engineers around the world coming up with innovative solutions to help society manage a changing landscape. One such example is located in the Netherlands, a nation where approximately 50% of the population lives below sea level. To help citizens in low-lying areas cope with rising sea levels, floating houses are being constructed with foam-filled concrete foundations. This makes them buoyant, although the houses are secured to pilings driven deep into the ground to keep them from floating away. All utility connections are flexible and can move with the house as the water rises & falls. However, make no mistake about it, these structures are not houseboats, they are proper buildings and they represent a unique, highly effective way for modern societies to remain on the water for the foreseeable future.
