Unlike most other forms of renewable energy, humanity can utilize the wind without fear of limitation through natural means, such as drought. That being said, it is important to note that not every place on Earth is considered (consistently) windy enough to be viable for the placement of modern, high-efficiency wind turbines. However, there are three general locations that can provide the necessary wind velocities to keep these engineering masterpieces spinning day in and day out… They are best when placed offshore, in valleys, or in open plains.
In particular, California has over 13,000 wind turbines capable of generating enough electricity to light up San Francisco! Yet, wind power remains a bit player in total statewide electric production, amounting to a scant 6.5% compared to 61% for natural gas. While wind and other renewables have gained ground compared to fossil fuels, more must be done.
