Thanks to passive solar heating and energy efficient skylights, buildings can save energy.
When architects have the freedom to design a structure on a plot of land as they see fit, they’ll often incorporate passive solar heating into the design. Since the Sun’s thermal energy, and the light it provides, can be easily harnessed based on its path through the sky, window placement becomes crucial if the technique is to work.
For temperate areas, energy experts suggest that windows face the southern sky in order to maximize solar heat gain in winter. Conversely, the part of a building facing north should be more wall than window. This will prevent cold air infiltration through windows that never see direct sunlight anyway. Additionally, skylighting systems can help bring natural light into buildings where design parameters might otherwise limit window size or even count. Modern, energy efficient skylights let in natural light, but not much else, thanks to specialized glazings that meet or exceed common energy code standards!
