Respect the Grid
With summer in full swing, electrical demand to power everything in our daily lives is at its highest around the country. Should outages occur, the general public is quick to blame the “national grid” for not being up to the task of meeting our insatiable demand for energy.
But what is the national electric grid?
Believe it or not, there is no single, nationwide power grid!
There are actually three separate grids operating within the 48 contiguous states: the Eastern Interconnection, which serves states east of the Rocky Mountains; the Western Interconnection, which serves states west of the Rocky Mountains; and the Texas Interconnection. While it seems that the entire country would be linked together by this system – preventing any major blackouts – the truth is that there are a limited number of links between them. Each system typically operates independently of one another and it underscores why system maintenance for reliability & resiliency are paramount.
