It’s the stuff of nightmares… Fire in a high-rise building.
Regardless of where one lives in the world, tall buildings exist and they all share one disconcerting characteristic… Above a certain height, ladders and fire cannons are unable to reach both the fire and any occupants that may be trapped.
What occurred on June 14, 2017 in West London at Grenfell Tower has put the world on notice. Investigations into what allowed the fire to spread so voraciously will continue for quite some time. Preliminary reports believe that the exterior cladding may have been at fault due to material composition (polyethylene) as well as an air cavity that allowed the flames to rapidly climb and engulf the upper floors.
This tragedy has spawned a renewed push to reassess the safety of both the overall design of existing structures as well as any fire safety systems that may – or may not – be in place.
